From this month, customers nationwide will be able to shop online for the beautiful Beulah collection as worn by the Middleton sisters, Camilla Rutherford, Poppy Delevigne, Natasha Bedingfield and a host of other fashion savvy stars. Formerly exclusively available in a select number of London boutiques or by invitation to the SW6 showroom, Beulah can now be delivered to your door.

With its colourful yet classy evening dresses and 70’s inspired fringed kaftans or floral, festival-chic, floaty maxi skirts, Beulah’s range is not just feminine and flattering it also carries an ethical message.

The partners behind the label (Natasha Rufus-Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan) explain ‘,Beulah London traces its origins back to 2009, when the two of us had a life transforming opportunity to work in Atulya, an aftercare home in Delhi slums. Having witnessed the harrowing effects of human trafficking and sex trade, we felt moved to raise awareness of this important issue. We hit on an idea of launching an ethical fashion label with a transparent supply chain, focused on timeless and effortless elegance. Beulah London was launched in 2011, helping provide a sustainable livelihood to those that have come out of sex trafficking.’

Each exquisite Beulah garment comes with a reusable canvas bag – bearing the distinctive butterfly logo – which has been made by these victims of trafficking and some of the items from the collections are produced through ‘Open Hand’ which is a Delhi women’s community project looking to break the poverty cycle.

In addition, the proceeds from each of Beulah’s distinctive Shibani scarf (as worn by Jessica Alba and picked as a ‘must have item’ by Vogue stylist Martha Ward) go to the United Nations Blue Heart campaign.

The label was listed by the Sunday Telegraph recently as one of Kate Middleton’s essential dresses and Sophie Anderton auctioned her Beulah LBD to raise money for the Too Many Women charity.

Moronic takes the form of a photographic commentary on ‘the linguistic paradoxes found within news media search engines, using a variety of still-life and performative methods’ . monochromatic forms, sometimes elusive, sometimes sharp, occupy each picture.

The work acts as a playful narrative that flirts with rhetoric and upturns linguistic meaning. each photograph is an embodiment of an oxymoron. ‘Half Naked’ and ‘Overfull’ are stellar examples of artistic works asking questions about the very nature and existence of language.

Brixton continues in its rising popularity with a new independent venue Market House opening its doors this spring. Built over 100 years ago as part of the Truman Brewery empire, the building, located in Coldharbour Lane, has been lovingly restored revealing the original ornate facade, in all its former splendour. The interior re-ignites the trend for all things vintage with a mad cap selection of eclectic furnishings, light fittings and reclaimed materials, offering cosy hideaways, dining areas and lounge seating.

Market House itself aims to be an unpretentious ‘speakeasy’ bar, bistro and music hall in central Brixton, supporting local and independent suppliers of organic beers, ales, ciders and wines. Daytimes and early evenings, Market House dons the bistro hat, again sourcing much of its produce from suppliers of grass-fed and organic meats, sustainably sourced fish and independent local traders for fruit and vegetables.

FOOD & DRINK

Food ranges from classic British fare including organic Hereford beef burgers (The Market House Burger) with double cooked chips and organic ketchup, Beer Battered Haddock with homemade tartar sauce and chips, or The Ultimate Club Sandwich with free range chicken, oven dried tomatoes, streaky bacon and organic parmesan with caesar dressing in a sourdough calfone bread – to – more Mediterranean dishes such as Greek Spanakopita with its light filo pastry filled with ricotta cheese and spinach, served with tzatziki yoghurt dip and mixed leaf salad.

MUSIC

Music promises to be a more left-of-centre affair with deejays and live acts steering away from the more traditional weekend anthems to a wider range of vintage/modern global sounds. Weekend selectors will be aiming squarely at the feet with an array of feelgood retro-reggae, diggin-the-crates funk, blues ‘n’ breaks, tropicalismo, twisted disco and then some – till 4am.

THE OFFICIAL OPENING

Thursday 10th May promises a mind-blowing carnival with a free cocktail giveaways and a complimentary food tasting fiesta. Plus three of Londons pioneering promoters deliver a super heavyweight selection of tropical beats with dancefloor cumbias, baile funk mash ups, funky reggae, red hot sambas and then some with DJ Cliffy (Batmacumba), Russ Jones, aka the Hackney Globe Trotter and Cal Jader (Movimentos), all showcasing the newest and finest sounds straight from the Favelas and Latin Barrio. Performing live will be Brixton’s own ERI OKAN - a samba school, an afro block, an expression of original street culture, integral to London; its roots are in scorching rhythms from North East Brazil.
